Quiz - "Save and Continue" To avoid a student losing a quiz due to a power interruption, server problems, intenet break etc. can you add a "Save and Continue" button to the question pages so that a partial save will at least not lose everything?
Some quizzes I have may have a duration of up to two hours. Barrie Morgan Hi Barrie,
Thanks for the feature request, I'll add it to our list and make sure you get an update when we've had a chance to add it. In the meantime, I'd recommend maybe splitting the longer quizzes in two. Alexander McCabe Glad it is on your list Alex, I have persuaded a client to reduce their exam essay questions and add to the multiple choice with the main intent of greatly reducing the overall demands on manual marking for the instructor.
I have also split the exam into Part 1 (m/c) and Part 2 (essay) each with its own token, so if there is a power/server problem they do not have all their eggs in one basket. So I look forward to the "save and continue" feature being implemented when it comes to the top of your "to do" list, this will be a huge plus. Barrie Morgan A great feature, one that is almost ever requested by our quiz takers. Looking forward to having it implemented Michel Hallo Michel
I shall add your voice to our requests for this feature and we will try and let you know when we manage to add it to Question Writer. Hazel Skeet While I look forward to the "Save and Continue" feature being announced, I have a client who is having a look at creating a "batch" feature on their computer system, to match the keystrokes a student performs during an exam.
It will save work simultaneously and put it into a sort of holding bin, so if there is a power down during a 2 hour exam, all will not be lost. Then at the close of the day after exams are completed (say 6pm?) the batches will be uploaded to their server and then on to QW Tracker in the normal way. This should be only a short-term measure until QWT has the feature. My questions are: has anyone experience of what my client is planning? and will QWT be okay accepting a deluge of a batch of exams being uploaded on one fell swoop? Barrie Morgan Hi Barrie,
I don't really understand what your client is proposing here - I'm not sure how you'd go about saving the state of an exam in the event of a power-down and then submit partially complete entries to QWT. Alexander McCabe Alex - our banks here used to have this delayed feature for their ABMs - transactions made during the day would be stored in a backup file and then when the date changed about 6pm, the backup would then be uploaded to the main computer and processed to customer's accounts.
My client feels that keystrokes could be simultaneously saved into their own backup server, and then after the exam is complete, upload this to QWT. If power goes down during an exam, keystrokes are saved up to then, and when power comes back up again, the student can continue in their exam where they were cut off, without loss of their previous work. I am not a techie but I think this is a broad idea of what is being looked at. In the "old" days, when computers were not as reliable as they are now, I set Microsoft Excel/Word to autosave every 10 minutes or so, and even now I still have the habit of doing a manual save by occasionally clicking the floppy icon "just in case". I will keep you posted on this one, Barrie Barrie Morgan I have a client very anxious for the "Save and Continue" feature to be implemented (students did have a bad habit of using the back button in error and losing their exam) and I have assured them that this on your to-do list.
They tell me that Moodle and Blackboard do have a save feature BUT you can not then go back and change a previously submitted question - it is locked in. That is a bigger problem so I just put detailed warnings on the Instruction page and change the "back" scrolling arrow (on pinstripe) to read "back to previous question". So roll on "Save and Continue" but with the option to also go back and do a change, and then do a resave. Barrie Morgan Hi Barrie,
Yes, it is on our features request list. I'd also recommend launching the quiz in a new window or tab. This will mean that there is no page to go back to, and also you can define that the back button doesn't appear in the toolbar. Alexander Hallo
Just to let everyone know latest version of Question Writer, version 4.2 allows the recovery of results in the event of a power failure or loss of internet connection. You can read more about this new feature in our blog: [www.questionwriterblog.com] and download the latest version of the software from our website: [www.questionwriter.com] Hazel Skeet This is a very welcome feature and is saving a huge amount of frustration - and anger - by students who previously lost an exam after maybe 2 hours due to power failure or hitting the back button by mistake.
Many thanks Question Writer :) Barrie Morgan |
