Can't publish

Working with Adam to resolve problem publishing from within out network.
Our corporate proxy server allows traffic to [www.questionwritertracker.com].
I can connect and login to this address when using IE but the application still fails to publish. Error message is "There was a problem connecting to the server. Check your internet connection and try again". Can you please advise details of all addresses and ports the application uses so we check if anything else is required to be allowed.
Thanks

Hallo Bob

Question Writer uploads directly to the

and

site.

It uses the standard http protocol to do this - I believe that is on port 80 and 443 for secure uploads.

I hope this helps

Hi Bob,

This is a list of all of our best advice on resolving this issue,

[en.wikibooks.org]

I don't have any additional suggestions at the moment, but I'm considering adding a feature to allow users to enter proxy settings directly in QW to see if this helps. Would you be able to help test this feature?

Hi
Have identified the reason for the application not being able to connect from our site.
Proxy server will not work accept [www.questionwritertracker.com:443].
It needs to have [www.questionwritertracker.com].
If you use https: then port 443 is used so can the application be modified to use [www.www.questionwritertracker.com] for connecting?

Cheers
Bob

Hi Bob,

QW will usually use https as the default - but it is possible with a 3.2->3.4 upgrade that it is still using http.

I've updated the 3.5 Alpha to include a setting in the login box that allows the login server and protocol to be set explicitly.

If you'd rather stick with 3.4 for now, you can change the server URL root in the settings file. You'll find that in the directory,

(Windows 2000 / Windows XP)

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Central Question Ltd\Question Writer 3\AppSettings.dat

(Windows Vista)

C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Local\Central Question Ltd\Question Writer 3\AppSettings.dat

You'll need to change the value for QWTServer before starting the application.

Hi. How does one create a link in my website to a quiz I made using Question Writer? Does any software have to be uploaded into my hosting account?

Hi John,

When your quiz is ready, choose the 'Publish to Question Writer Tracker' option in the 'Publish' menu. This will upload your quiz to our hosting service and copy the link to your clipboard.

You can also log into your Question Writer Tracker account and get the links to your existing quizzes at

You won't need any extra software in your hosting account.

Hi Alex

So if Download QW 3.5 alpha from the link on your most recent blog post, this should resolve our uploading publishing issues correct?

Will I need to do anything to each of our existing quizes? or once 3.5 is installed all we do is click publish as normal and it should let it through?

Is there any risk upgrading to 3.5 alpha rather then staying with 3.4 and doing the other changes you have mentioned?

Hi Adam,

QW 3.5 is still in Alpha - this means there it is not yet feature complete and there is liklihood of undiscovered bugs. It is best to use it only for experimentation rather than for production work but the aim is that it should treat all your existing quizzes in the same way, but offer additional features.

One of those features is to give more control over the URL which is used when connecting to the Question Writer Tracker - it is difficult to say if this will fix the problem you're seeing, but you can achieve the same effect without using v3.5 by editing your AppSettings.dat file as outlined earlier.

Just downloaded and installed QW 3.5 aplha, tried to publish but got the same error. Will revert back to 3.4 and try edditing the App Settings as indicated.

OK Alex, so I reverted my installation back to 3.4 and drilled into the directory ....... C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Central Question Ltd\Question Writer 3\AppSettings.dat

We are running Windows XP-Pro 64Bit SP2

But when I was looking for the "Dat" file it wasn’t there? I did find the ”AppSetting.set” file but this did not have anything in it about the QWT server. Do you have any more ideas on how to solve this?

Hi Adam,

The AppSettings.set file is the correct file. It may only save the QWTServerURL after a succesful upload which is a bit of a catch-22. However if you tried the 3.5 Alpha and this didn't help, it is unlikely this measure will help with your proxy. I don't have any additional suggestions.
