Question Numbering I have started putting the question number in each question line, to make it easier to match up responses in the the Marks Summary Report in Tracker.
However, I have been noticing that the Summary Report gives question answers in reverse number order. My guess is that students tend to scroll quickly through the questions to "get a feel" as it were, and ends up on the last question, and then answers that one, scrolls backwards answering each question, rather than scroll quickly back to the beginning and then answering from #1 and so on. Does my interpretation fit in with how the Sunmmary Reports are programmed? Barrie Morgan Something strange here, I have just tried an exam, answered the questions in numerical sequence from #1 to #26, but the Summary Report displays the answers backwards starting at #26.
But sometimes the sequence is out of step and answers may be for example: #26, #24, #25, #23, #21, #22 etc. Can you explain please? thanks. Barrie Morgan Just had another try and right arrowed quickly to the last question, then answered them in reverse order and the Summary Report still shows the questions and answers in reverse order, last one first, first one last. Barrie Morgan Hi Barrie,
I'm trying to replicate this to identify what the problem might be but can't just yet. Usually the answers should be shown in the order they appear in the test. Can you tell me in your experiments - do you use a timer on the quiz, and does the timer run to zero as the way of ending the quiz? Also, is there anything else in common in the technical record of the reports where the answers are reversed - all using MACs or the same version of Flash - something like that? Alexander McCabe No, I do not have a timer on these exams.
The Flash reference on the bottom of two Summary Reports from two separate students show WIN 10,0,32,18 and WIN 10,0,45,2. I can ask if they used MACs, but I have a PC and my own tests also reversed the numbering in descending order, with occasional numbers out of step. Do you want me to e-mail to you the actual reports or can you access them yourself? Barrie Morgan Alexander - I may have found the problem - I had "show question number" checked under Question Options when setting up the exam.
This may have caused a conflict and reversed the numbering on the marks report. I have unchecked "show question number" and done another quick test and now the report's question numbers are now okay in ascending order. Does this make sense to you? I am now going to change my other exams. In the Introduction Display Instructions, I explain how many questions there are and what type, so removing "I of 26, 2 of 26" etc will not be a problem. Barrie Morgan Hi Barrie,
It doesn't make any sense to me at all - but if it's working for you, then I'm glad you've found a workaround. I'll continue looking into what might be at the root of the problem. Alexander McCabe I have tried out another quiz with the same results - if I uncheck "show question number" the Summary Report then produces answers correctly in ascending question number order. I am sure you can identify why, but it is quite weird. Barrie Morgan Been trying again to replicate the numbering problem.
I have tried some quizzes with "show question number" selected in "Question Options". Also selected "End of Quiz" in "Feedback Method". Feedback screens are in correct numerical ascending order, and also QW Tracker Summary Report is correct. Have you found something to fix at your end? I will keep monitoring student submissions and try to find a common denominator for the bug. Barrie Morgan I have had to suspend again putting line numbers in the Question Body portion of each question, -ie 1. EU stands for European University - as it is again distorting the Summary Report by either reversing (or scrambling) the number order in the Question Breakdown section, or truncating the question to only one or two words.
Having a question number in the Question Breakdown is an important part of reviews with the students and I do hope you can let me know if there is something I am doing wrong? I also select HTML in Appearance Settings <br/> to break lines up, could this be causing a conflict somehow? Barrie Morgan Hi Barrie,
I haven't been able to get to the bottom of this yet - however maybe I could introduce a workaround that would help. What if there were an option to order the questions alphabetically - would that help? Alexander McCabe That should be okay, I make up questions from each chapter in the textbooks and there is really no sequence or order of priority, so an alpha sequence for the first letter in the question appears fine with no problem.
So: 1. A typical situation........ 2. Before you can........ 3. Do you think..... 4. Kenneth Young is a..... etc. I will give this a try as soon as you make the option available, thanks. Barrie Morgan On further thought, this alpha sort may not be a workable solution as some exams are 200+ questions grouped in chapters order, so doing the initial alpha letter sequence could scramble them all and ruin the post-review the instructors do.
I am still unable to find a common cause of the reversed numbering in the Summary Report but will keep experimenting. Barrie Morgan |
