Every October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated by patients, survivors and families of those who have lost their loved ones from this disease. During this time, a flurry of activities is organized by local and national organizations to raise awareness among the larger public.
Perhaps you know a friend, a family member, office mate or neighbor who has battled with breast cancer. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month is their chance to acknowledge what they’ve been through and spread some hope and cheer.
Thankfully, breast cancer research and treatment have come a long way. Today, better treatments and early detection are resulting to lower death rates. Yet, the fight against breast cancer is fiercer than ever. A cure is not in the offing but with prudent care in the early stages of this disease, more lives can be saved.
This event and others like it have had their share of controversies. Pharmaceutical firms and businesses as sponsors are clearly not there for just the cause. But we have to admit that even if their interest are not purely altruistic, their resources help bring the goals to fruition.
What’s key is not to find fault but rather to focus on what this event is all about: breast cancer awareness. It’s about saving more lives even as we remember those who have lost theirs in the fight against breast cancer. May their love and memories live on during this Breast Cancer Awareness Month and beyond.
